Past Hurricanes that shut down Walt Disney World, will Hurricane Dorian be added to the list ?

With the magnitude of Hurricane Dorian, which upgraded to a Cat 4 Hurricane, will Walt Disney World close ?

They have closed many times from Hurricanes in the past , and sustained damage. From massive flooding to uprooted trees . Take look at those hurricanes that have shut down the Mouse-House “below” !

Disney of course is launching the new “Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge” this Labor Day Weekend , and a Hurricane can put a massive damper on their newest attraction !

However“, they do take safety for their guests and workers seriously. And with the continuous updates on Hurricane Dorian, the chances are looking more like a “yes” that the “Mouse-House” will have to close for a day or so until the hurricane gets out of the area !

See below, the past Hurricanes that made Disney World hang up the “closed” sign .

Hurricane Elena – (A Cat 3 Hurricane)

Magic Kingdom and Epcot closed early on Aug. 31, 1985 due to concerns about Hurricane Elena, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Hurricane Floyd – (A Cat 4 Hurricane)

Disney World’s theme parks and water parks closed early on Sept. 14, 1999 and remained closed on Sept. 15 for Hurricane Floyd. Disney’s Animal Kingdom eventually opened on Sept. 15 after Floyd’s path made an unexpected turn.

Hurricane Charley – (A Cat 4 Hurricane)

Disney World parks closed early on Aug. 13, 2004 because of Hurricane Charley, CBS reported. Disney’s Animal Kingdom never opened on Aug. 13, according to CBS.

Hurricane Frances – (A Cat 4 Hurricane)

Disney World shuttered its gates on Sept. 4 and 5 in 2004 for Hurricane Frances, CNBC reported. Disney MGM Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Blizzard Beach remained closed on Sept. 6

Disney World resort parks were closed again on Sept. 26, 2004 because of Hurricane Jeanne, according to CNBC.

Hurricane Matthew – (A Cat 5 Hurricane)

Disney World closed early on Oct. 6, 2016 and remained closed on Oct. 7 due to Hurricane Matthew, according to CNBC.

Disney’s Florida parks closed early on Sept. 9, 2017 and remained closed on Sept. 10 and 11 for Hurricane Irma.

So will Hurricane Dorian (a Cat 4 Hurricane ) close Walt Disney World ?

“Most likely…. that could be a yes”.

“So far however” , Disney has not made any announcements or statements as of 6am Friday 8-30-2019 .

Hurricane Dorian – Latest updates for Tourists and Residents.

As of Thursday 8-29-2019, Hurricane Dorian was upgraded to hit land at a Cat 4 Hurricane.

All forecasters are stating , this will be the biggest hurricane in three decades. And very dangerous.

A “State of Emergency” has been announced by Florida’s Governor for the entire state of Florida .

Its due to come in Sunday into Monday, “Monday & Tuesday” to have most of the impact from the Hurricane. Early storm/hurricane effects will be starting on Saturday .

Expect heavy rain, wide spread flooding, very dangerous winds that could hit 135 miles an hour, downed trees, poles and wires, widespread power outages, structural damage and wide spread evacuations “prior” to storm hitting.

Once hurricane and high winds start, planes will have extreme issues coming and going out of the State” .

*For residents & current visitors, Make sure to start Hurricane preparations “now” (See list below) :

•Gather important papers/insurance papers/medical papers/travel documents, (Keep all in clear sealed bags).

•Make sure Prescriptions are filled.

•Get cash from ATM (credit cards will not work during power outages).

•Make sure gas tanks are filled.

•Get battery’s/battery lights/etc.

•Get a Battery operated radio.

•Flashlights.

•Get cards/games/books for kids.

•Disney Resorts are very careful with their guests, so food/drinks & interior resort entertainment will most likely be available.

•Buy extra snacks/drinks for your hotel rooms.

•If you are a tourist and your due to leave FL on Monday or Tuesday, try changing flights and leave Friday/Saturday . (Monday & Tuesday will be the worst for this storm).

•Get extra Fuel Rods for cell phones.

•Get extra pet supplies (cat litter/puppy pads/animal food/etc).

•Get plenty of water/non-perishable food/snacks for 7 days.

•Mini gas-powered Generator if staying (never run inside enclosed area).

•Mini grill/sternos for warming food(for residents who are staying).

•Wash all clothes before storm hits.

•Fill bathtubs with clean cold water (It can be utilized for drinking/etc should power be out in length).

•Let everyone know where you/your family are (In your home/hotel/A Disney Resort/shelter/or where you are evacuated to).

•Help/check on elderly, sick, frail neighbors.

•Do not abandon pets, call local shelters/veterinary offices for boarding them, if you cannot care for your pets or take them with you if evacuated .

•Secure your home/windows/other structures.

•Gather & pack up anything in your yards/pool areas.
